Today we woke to beautiful clear skies again and headed off via the city of Homs towards Palmyra. After Homs the landscape becomes more desert-like. It is scenic in a very unfamiliar way dry, arid, flat plains with rocky mountains in the distance, Bedouin tents with flocks of sheep outside. We also passed military outposts with bunkers, tanks and missile launchers. It reminded me of my little (now 6ft +) brothers toy soldier sets. We considered stopping to take photos of a couple of rocket launchers but then thought better of it.
The first view of Palmyra is of the castle (citadel) and the ruined city spread out below. It is immediately apparent that these are ruins on a large scale.
We arrived at Palmyra in the middle of the day too hot for walking around ruins, so we went for a swim instead. For
