|Tuesday 9th October - South Africa - Central Drakensberg
Manys an hour Andrew and I have spent in tearooms, bars or tents looking out on Scottish mountainsides and wondering if the weather will clear or not. Today felt a bit like that. We waited at the Backpackers for a few hours in the morning in pouring rain, still unable to see anything of the amphitheatre. We had hoped to go up the Sani pass into Lesotho today and then spend a couple of days crossing Lesotho, but the rain is so heavy that the pass is likely to be closed, or at the very least unsafe. Were thinking we may have to give Lesotho a miss another place well have to come back to!
We decided to take a drive up to another area of the mountains, Champagne Castle in the Central Drakensberg. En-route we stopped at another garage for another unsuccessful attempt at diagnosing the shudder problem.
There are excellent campsites in the Drakensberg and we had intended to stay in them, but again tonight we chickened out and took refuge from the rain in a backpackers hostel called Inkosana Lodge. Inkosana is a really lovely place, clean simple, bright and nicely decorated with helpful, welcoming hosts, good food and homemade bread. We happily spent the afternoon at the lodge, relaxing by the log fire and soon decided to spend two nights here instead of one.
