|Tuesday 10th July - Ethiopia - Bahir Dar
It was still pouring rain when we woke this morning, so we decided to pack up and leave instead of going on another walk as wed planned. Despite the weather, weve enjoyed the Simien mountains very much. It would be even better to visit in the dry season.
We drove back towards Gonder, arriving there in time for lunch and a car wash to rid the car of its thick, muddy coating and then we continued on south to Bahir Dar.
In Bahir Dar we made a beeline for the renowned Ghion Hotel and were disappointed to be honest. The Ghion is a well-known stop for overlanders and is in a beautiful spot with beautiful grounds. However, the area that was available for us to camp in was pretty grotty, behind the toilet block and next to a big puddle. We looked at the hotel rooms and found them to be grubby and fousty-smelling. We hummed and hawed and moved on to the Papyrus Hotel instead. The Papyrus isnt brilliant either, but its a bit better. It has a pool, but on closer inspection were not planning to swim there. By our measure the Belegez Pension in Gonder had it right keep things simple but keep them clean.
